Flaming Shot

It's been almost a month since I last posted here, but this is due to me leaving Brazil. Now in another country, it will take a while for me to build a decent bar again. During this period your will see only simple recipes, done with the material that I buy bit by bit or recipes that I prepared some time ago.
Please bear with me.

Starting with a request. A flaming drink.

There are several flaming drinks and they are all very fun to do.

This one here is not anyone in special, it was simply a generic example I prepared to entertain some friends in a party.

The recipe, case someone really wants to know is:
- 1 splash of crème de menthe
- 1 splash of blue curacao
..... built pousse-café style (just for fun)
..... I let it stand for a while to create some alcohol fumes and then set it alight.

A drink usually requires fire for a specific reason, an important detail I will cover in a future post, but this one was made really just as a demonstration.

But no matter what, it always impresses people.

White on White

It's finally time to post one of my own recipes.
Evoking the suprematist Malevich as an inspiration, I created this sweet Japanese-style drink.
It's refreshing and surprising. Sweet but a little bitter. And it leaves the drinker wondering what's inside.

- 1½ oz sake
- 1 oz Calpico (the original flavour, ready made)
- ½ oz lychee syrup
..... shake everything with ice. Be careful not to use neither big rocks or crushed ice. medium sized rocks only.
- 1 lychee as garnish (put the lychee before serving the mixture back into your glass)

By the time your client finishes the drink, most of the ice will have already melted, revealing the lychee in the end.

It's a good drink to be enjoyed during hot summer nights, in a little reunion or after a light meal.

Try it out and leave your opinion!

God Father

Some time ago I was in Brasilia (Brazil's capital) and I got the oportunity to prepare to my sister one of my favorite drinks.

- 1¼ oz Whisky (a delicious 18 years Scotch Whisky)
- ¾ oz Amaretto (one of my favorite amaretto, a Disaronno)

Simple and perfect.

An ideal mix to relax on the couch after a long day and talk to your firends and family while savoring it.

This combination, by itself, is one of my prefered ones.
The fact that my sister had nice ingredients to prepare it made the afternoon even better.

Cuba Libre

Cuba Libre. A whole party can go on with just this.
I was just teaching this one to my dad, minutes ago. You know, since we are on the theme.

Another one of his favorites. And also every one in a college.

- 1 lime slice (totally optional)
- 1¼ oz Rum (any brand will do the trick, but it also changes the taste)
- fill up with heaven's black nectar (A.K.A. Coca-Cola)

If it seems easy, it's because it is!

If you are a student, go with the cheap stuff and have a happy night.
But you have some money to spare, try doing it with diferent brands of Rum. Try it and notice how it changes the taste.

Awesome drink!

Drink sensacional!

Dry Martini

Sunday was Father's day (here in Brazil). This demanded one of the most famous and classic drinks in the world. Also my father's favorite.

The recipe is simple:

- 2 oz Gin
- 1 dash Dry Vermouth
..... lime zest
..... two pitted olives as garnish. Through a small sword, of course.

Although it is simple, no Martini is equal to another.
The bartenders vary the quantity of vermouth, the number of olives, the strengh ot the zest and so on.

But maybe the most important factor in a Martini is the way it is stirred.
I prefer bigger ice rocks and I watch out for the ice when I'm mixing it.
The more you hit your bar spoon against the ice or the more you hit one ice rock against another, the more ice chips that you make, watering the drink.

And forget about stiring it for too long, also. You're mixing a drink, not making a cake. Do it just enouth for the spirits to blend in and chill, with the ice melting as little as possible.
After all, both the Mixing glass and the cocktail glass are already pre-chilled.

In the end, your own way to make a Dry Martini comes with time. My first one was plain dreadful.

Today I can say it turns out pretty good, but a perfect Dry Martini requires a life-long technique.

A receita é simples:

- 60 ml de Gin
- 1 dash de Vermouth Seco
..... zest de limão
..... duas azeitonas sem caroço de guarnição. Numa espadinha, claro.

Springbok

hard to do but cool to look at
The last drink of the night was a digestive one. A very sweet shot.

The original recipe of this drink asks for equal quantities of each ingredient. But after tasting several times, I decided to change it a little bit to:

- ½ oz crème de menthe (I used Bols' liqueur)
- 1 oz marula liqueur (usually it's Amarula, but I used Stock's one)
..... build it pousse-café style (by gently pouring a layer after another)

I made the change in the proportions because I find that if it's done half and half, the menthe flavor overcomes the marula. Specially because it is a shot, so you don't sip it. You drink it whole in a single turn.
This recipe works better for me, but if it happens for you to LOVE menthe, then go with the original.

It takes some time to train your technique, but it is worth it. Built cocktails like that stand out a lot. And this is very easy one to start with.

Montar coquetéis desta forma chama muita a atenção.

Purple Rain

There are several recipes of Purple Rain's with vodka or rum, but I decided to try one with only Gin as the base liquor. This one I made to myself.

- 1½ oz gin.
- 1½ oz cranberry juice
- 1 oz blue curacao liqueur
- ½ oz sweet & sour (in Brazil it is very rare to buy this particular mix. We usually do it ourselves from ½ lime juice and ½ sugar)
..... stir everything
- top with club soda

Truth be told. I do prefer the other one I did this day, a Dave Matthews.

The Purple Rain is a little too bitter and, considering that there is no consensus around the internet over this recipe, I had to find the proportions myself.

Don't get me wrong. It is a good drink. But I wouldn't include it in my top 10. Maybe I'll try it again another day, with different quantities of each ingredient.

Não me entenda errado.
